Antonia and Bill Buckingham, 26 March 2006

Rose Hill and Iffley ward, created in 2002, is a ward with several distinct communities. There’s Rose Hill estate, built in stages in the thirties, forties, seventies and 2000s, where about half the electorate live. The estate is deprived both by Oxfordshire and national standards, but hopefully with the housing redevelopment and associated regeneration, things are getting better.

Then there’s Iffley village, just down the hill, next to the river Thames. Iffley village is one of the picturesque places where you can’t quite believe you’re still in the city, and the noted Norman church of St Mary is always worth a visit. Between the two areas is what the estate agents call Iffley Borders, which is a quiet suburban part of the ward and contains the main shopping parade.
