I’m Lead Member for Social Inclusion and Young People on the City Executive Board of Oxford City Council. I’ve been on the executive board since I was elected in 2006, firstly as an opposition member under the Liberal Democrat administration 2006-08, and more recently as a portfolio holder for the Labour administration since 2008.
My job is to lead and champion what the council does on the social inclusion side of things. We’re a district council, so we don’t run children’s services, schools or social services, but we do make a big contribution to the wellbeing of our citizens.
The issues I work on include:
- Regeneration, leading the Regeneration Framework and social and economic regeneration of our city and estates
Support to the voluntary sector, including our annual £1.6m grants programme, the largest in the south-east
Play, including our £2.5m two-year programme to do up every play area in the city, plus our playschemes and the skate park
Community cohesion, including leading the partnership running Oxford’s Prevent programme
Community facilities, community centres and community development
I sit on the following partnerships:
- Oxfordshire Children and Young People’s Trust Board, and the Central Area Trust Board
Oxfordshire Health and Wellbeing Partnership
Oxfordshire Stronger Communities Alliance
I am a Labour activist in Oxford , working to re-elect our great MP, Andrew Smith. I'm also a councillor for Rose Hill and Iffley ward, and Lead Member for Social Inclusion and Young People on Oxford City Council.
